Waarom een composteertoilet ?

Is a composting toilet comfortable ?

A modern and high quality compost toilet is very efficient and comfortable, therefore, not comparable to the old toilet from grandmother's time. It is time to put an end to the unfair prejudice.

What about the smell?

Modern composting toilets do not smell dirty, even shortly after use or if you smell up close. You notice any smell. This is because there is an air outlet, ventilator and a small electric instantly sucks the nasty smells (both in the toilet itself and nasty air from the toilet room or bathroom). In addition, an optimal temperature and ventilation for rapid dehydration.

So a composting toilet often scores better than a traditional water toilet:

  • Is a water toilet in one room with no outside window, odors often remain hanging
  • Is not flushed (eg urine what) you get an ammoniak-like odor quickly

Many additional products providing an odour that hang in a traditional water toilet give a penetrating, synthetic fragrance but are not so pleasant. They often generate additional water pollution.

What about hygiene?

There are no problems:

  • Bacteria and germs can not develop and are quickly eliminated.
  • No problems with flies or other insects

After using the toilet hot the material is dried and composted. This is done under a high temperature, with proper ventilation.

What I see when using a toilet?

Nothing. Unused toilet was closed. Will you sit on the toilet automatically opens up. When you stand up after use, the toilet closes itself. A fragrance can not develop because: the airflow is inward, milling with the other matter occurs immediately after the temperature and ensure that the internal temperature of circulating air high enough. The smells disappear quickly through the air outlet and through dehydration and evaporation is reduced and the matter quickly dehydrated.

Should a composting toilet be located outside ?

No. An unused toilet is closed. When you sit on the toilet it automatically opens up. If you stand up after use, the toilet closes itself. An odour can not develop because: the airflow is inward, mixing with the other elements occurs immediately, temperature sensors ensure that the internal temperature of circulating air is high enough. The smells disappear quickly through the air outlet.

How regularly should I remove the compost?

This depends on the use. In case of permanent use this may be each 2 to 4 weeks. The compost is odor free and easy to remove without making you dirty.

You can see from outside from when the composting box is emptied, so you do have to open the door unnecessarily.

After emptying the composting box we recommend to add some mulch. By maintaining a high position of mulch, we avoid that too much urine goes in the lower box.

Should I manually intervene in function of temperature, humidity, etc.?

The most modern and advanced equipment to automatically control a lot and this domain is still progress. Examples:

  • The best models stool and urine are not separated. So you use a compost toilet like a normal toilet.
  • Inside the toilet, the stool and urine are in a common area. You should not make a separate urine basket empty.
  • The compost toilet is thermostate of 1 to 10, you set in function of the number of people. This does not have to be changed, except in exceptional circumstances, e.g. when more people use it.
  • You have no humus to add on a daily basis, also no other products. After emptying the composting box we recommend to add some mulch.
  • Toilet cleaning is not necessary (as opposed to an ordinary toilet)
  • You can see the functioning of the device from outside, you do not open it to verify

Will a composting toilet work for the daily use of several people?

Certainly, it suffices to choose the right capacity, but 3 adults are available for permanent use (Biolet 10, 20, 45) or 4 adults (Biolet 60).

Can I use toilet paper?

Yes, both ecologically and ordinary toilet toilet. The toilet paper is mixed into pieces, which also accelerates the composting.

I wish to place a compost toilet in an existing house) (not construction), is this possible?

Definitely. The possibility exists for the composting toilets just to place in the existing toilet room or bathroom andto replace a regular toilet. What is needed is a simple electrical connection (variant without electricity is possible) and an air outlet (usually not foreseen) .

Should I leave the installation to a specialized technician?

No, the simple version where the composting box is incorporated into the toilet, anyone can do this.
